Camp Massasoit Camp Descriptions

Traditional

Campers will be divided into age groups and will experience a variety of camp activities, including archery, arts & crafts, sports, field games, nature walks, ropes challenge course and climbing tower with zip line, and swim lessons each day. Our camp will keep them physically active, enhance their social-emotional skills, and challenge them to learn new things every day. Special events will be planned throughout the summer, in addition to weekly themes and specialty days! (Session A-I)

Specialty Camps

In addition to our traditional option, Camp Massasoit offers the following programs:

Advanced Sailing – Opti Racing

This advanced sailing camp provides an introduction to the sport of sailboat racing in the Mattapoisett Harbor. This two-week camp teaches participants basic racing rules, advanced sailing technique, racing strategy, sportsmanship and problem-solving. The session concludes with a mini-regatta at Camp Massasoit. Prior sailing experience is required. Campers must be minnow level and/or pass a swim test prior to enrollment. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week. (Sessions F/G)

Camp Chefs

Camp chefs will create a variety of dishes using healthy ingredients. Campers will also have the opportunity to practice their measuring and mixing skills, in addition to skills such as following a recipe, substituting and presentation. It will all come together in several delicious products each day! Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week. (Sessions B, E & G)

Cheer

Do you have spirit? Our cheer camp gives campers the chance to get active and focus on teamwork. Cheerleaders will build self-confidence and self-esteem while learning the fundamentals of cheerleading, including basic motions, jumps, cheers, and chants. This two-week camp will culminate with a performance at the end of the second week. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week. (Sessions D/E & G/H)

Counselor in Training

The final step to becoming a YMCA Role Model, this 8-week immersive program will give participants the opportunity to experience various camp programs, assist in daily operations of camp, and receive valuable on-the-job experience. This camp nurtures leadership and responsibility while training young adults in the skills necessary to become potential staff members. (Session A-I)

Drama

If you have a passion for performing, or if you’ve always wanted to give it a try, this camp will introduce campers to the fundamentals of theatre, acting, and rehearsal, while working toward a theatrical production. This two-week camp will focus on skill-building and improvisation in the first week and rehearse for an end of week production in the second week! All experience levels are welcome. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week (Sessions B/C, D/E, F/G, H/I)

Fishing

If you have a trusty favorite fishing rod, bring it along and test your luck at Camp Massasoit’s Fishing Camp! Campers will learn the fishing basics and explore the ecology of the Mattapoisett harbor. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week.

Golf

This two-week camp is designed to teach campers the basics of golf. Campers will head over to Reservation Golf Course, just up the road from us, and work with a pro. Campers will learn the rules of the game, different strokes, and terminology through hands-on learning and practice. Campers must bring their own clubs. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week. (Session D/E)

Leader in Training

Your first step to becoming a YMCA leader. Appropriate for ages 13-14, this gateway program will instill our YMCA core values, and the necessary characteristics to one day become a YMCA Role Model.  LITs participate in physical, cognitive and social-emotional challenges, alongside adventure and teamwork.  This program helps teens develop friendships, fosters a sense of belonging and cultivates youth development.  (Session A-I)

Movie Making

This experience is for campers who are interested in exploring the world of video production. In this 2 week camp, campers will learn about story-boarding, camera operation techniques, and video editing. Campers will utilize contemporary technology such as tablets and movie apps to produce a short film. The final product will be a movie centering around life at Camp Massasoit! Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week. (Sessions A/B & E/F)

Ocean Kayak

Campers will learn basic paddling strokes, boat safety, take trips around the harbor and participate in traditional camp activities. Campers must be minnow level and/or pass a swim test prior to enrollment.

Picasso

Children will explore their creativity using different mediums of art. The camp is tailored to a variety of age groups, and feature many different art activities. A section of this camp will focus on seaside painting, learning watercolor techniques and color composition, This camp takes place inside and outside. Campers will also participate in Traditional camp activities. (Sessions C, F & H)

Pottery

Campers will create fun and beautiful clay projects. The pottery portion will account for half of the day, while campers participate in traditional camp activities for the other half. Campers will learn a variety of hand-building techniques, surface design application, and even get their hands on the potter’s wheel! By the end of this two-week session, campers will have gained skills in ceramics and have a collection of beautiful, glazed pottery to enjoy for years to come! (Sessions A/B, C/D, E/F, & G/H)

Sailing

This two-week camp offers a unique blend of teamwork and self-reliance by teaching to all levels while focusing on safety and general nautical knowledge. Campers will learn aboard Capri 14.2s and Optis. No prior sailing experience required. Campers must be minnow level and/or pass a swim test prior to enrollment. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week. (Sessions A/B, C/D, E/F, G/H)

Sailing Explorers

This camp is designed for the younger campers who want to get a feel for what Camp Massasoit’s sail camp is about. Special emphasis will be placed on making campers comfortable with all basic aspects of sailing. The goal of this camp is to help young sailors gain confidence and have the opportunity to experience other water sports. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week. (Session C)

Sports

This camp is designed for campers of all levels with a love for sports. This sports mix will include backyard sports, soccer, basketball, flag football, baseball, hockey, water sports and more, in addition to strength and conditioning, warm-up activities and teamwork techniques. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week. (Sessions A-I)

Spy Camp

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a secret agent? Step into the shoes of a detective, and learn the science behind becoming a spy. Campers will work on their problem-solving and team-building skills to solve mysteries. Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week.    (Sessions C, E & G)

Super Silly Science

Goop, ooze, fizz, bang, bubble!   Explore science with hands-on experiments, demonstrations and lots of fun with earth science, physics, chemistry, and biology.  Campers will be supplied with kid-friendly/kitchen-friendly ideas for experiments to do at home.  Campers will also participate in traditional outdoor camp activities throughout the week.  (Sessions D & F)
